Style and Self-Love: The Archetypal Images of Style (pt.3)

Updated: 6 days ago

Autumn is coming: leaves are falling, nature is renewing itself and with it also our wardrobe, to which we must integrate new items and let go of old ones.

Let's talk once again about how to enhance our style, what aesthetic personality is and in particular about the fascinating Yin & Yang stylistic method , to which I have already dedicated two articles , in which we saw that:

  • Discovering your Kibbe type can be transformative, as it helps us understand which shapes, textures and fashion styles best suit us.

  • It can be defined as a precursor of the concept of body positivity , as it studies and enhances every single bodily characteristic .

To understand how the Kibbe Method differs from the study of body shapes read here:

Just as in psychoanalysis there is a study focused on the archetypal images of the soul invented by the psychoanalyst Carl Gustave Jung, the Kibbe method also speaks of archetypal images or essences of style.

I am Valentina Maugeri, pseudo fashion blogger, graduated in fashion design who works in contact with the public

A little over a year ago I founded Dialoghi di Stile with the aim of letting my vision of the world of fashion shine through and making it and what surrounds it more accessible to all of you.

When, out of pure curiosity and vanity, I delved into the world of image consulting, reading books, joining groups and social channels, I began to have a more expansive idea of what beauty was, in addition to helping me discover a lot about myself and reflect on my image.

I firmly believe that even today, those who make a mistake in their look are excessively guided by trends or perhaps don't really know themselves, trying to convince themselves that they are comfortable with certain looks, when they actually know they are not.

The formation of one's own style and image passes through a more complex psychological investigation of the self , a research path whose final objective is to form and recognise the ego .

At the time I only knew that according to the color analysis I was a Soft Autumn for some and a Deep Light Autumn for others, I will reserve the right to tell you my vision on this later.

Archetypal images of style: how many exist?

As illustrated in the previous two articles, there are 7 essences of style in the yin and yang scale:

  • Romantic (yin characteristics);

  • Ingenue (bordering yin)

  • Ethereal (extreme yin)

  • Classic (perfect balance between Yin and Yang);

  • Gamine (yin bordering yang);

  • Dramatic (yang characteristics);

  • Natural (bordering yang);

Examples of style essences from the star system

In turn connected 8 subcategories : Soft Dramatic and Dramatic Classic, Soft Classic, Theatrical Romantic, Flamboyant Natural and Soft Natural, Flamboyant Gamine and Soft Gamine .

In each of these subgroups, the dominant archetype is “contaminated” by physical Yin or Yang elements that alter its basic balance.

Beyond this, a person is never characterized by a single essence, but generally by 3/4 that coexist in his style.

I know, it's complex to understand!

The infinite charm of this method is that, once you have identified your archetype, you will understand how to replicate your natural lines in clothing, makeup and hair styling to obtain an effect that is harmonious in every way.

Essences with Yin characteristics: Body type Romantic

In this article I want to start by analyzing the first Yin essence, the Romantic one.

Subjects with romantic features are characterized by soft, rounded and sinuous body lines: large and languid eyes, round cheekbones and cheeks, small hands and feet, rounded shoulders, evident curves, medium-small height, with an image that often transmits sweetness, cheerfulness and sensuality.

The Romantic world often includes curvy body types , women with an hourglass or apple body shape, and men with an oval or triangle body shape.

Here are some guidelines that will help you choose style elements that match your essence:

  • Romantic body types can use rounded shapes and rich, luxurious details to achieve this harmonious result: soft makeup, full lips, soft, wavy hair.

  • Don't hide your curves (I feel like saying this advice especially to curvy body types). If you like oversize, always balance the look with a contrasting piece, like a straight-cut jacket or cigarette pants. Soft and draped fabrics are fine but avoid those that are too thick and overlapping.

  • Not too long coats, short dresses, ruches and to create movement, wide and rounded necklines (even for men) and flowing shirts.

  • Small and round accessories: those with a retro style, such as watches, belts or jewelry, are very suitable. Bags and bum bags with a rounded design with thin chains.

In a world that often tells us what we should wear or how we should look, embracing your own essence of style is an act of rebellion . It is a bold statement that celebrates our individuality, that allows us to know and accept ourselves for who we are.

I am not an image consultant, I have not studied style and color harmony, I consider myself a passionate; if you want in-depth information or accept sources on the subject, you can click on the links of the images here or on the links in this and previous articles dedicated to the Kibbe method.
